Shiatsu has been used as a simple remedy in the Orient for centuries. It is a powerful healing art, well tested in it’s effectiveness for the maintenance of health and well-being. In Japanese, Shiatsu means applied finger pressure to various parts of the body which correspond with points of energy lines used in acupuncture. Shiatsu became popularly known in the West by the term ‘Acupressure’. This is based on an understanding that the human body is a system of energy which circulates through meridians, activating and charging all the body’s organs and functions to bring about an integrated wholeness. Harmony of energy is prompted by varying degrees of pressure by the practitioners hands and/or thumbs. This manipulation of palm healing is releasing areas of tension and points of weakness by revitalising the whole body. Shiatsu’s is natural, it can initiate self-healing of the receiver, remove the cause as well as relieve physical symptom, emotional disturbance and spiritual disorders. Shiatsu affects the physical, emotional and psychological levels of being. Treatment is attuned to individual development, total health and strengthening the character. The practitioner may give advice on diet, exercise, lifestyle, encouraging self-understanding and greater independence in health matters. This may lead to improved self-confidence and lasting peace of mind for a client. Shiatsu is used on the body as a whole and is undertaken in loose fitting, preferably cotton clothing. MAGGIE
