Process Oriented Psychology

Also known as POP or Process Work, developed by Dr Arnold Mindell in 1969, offers a new approach to individual and collective change. With its roots in Jungian psychology, Taoism and physics Process Work sometimes looks beyond causes of problems to their meaning and discovers potential patterns for change within the very experiences that disturb us.

Process Work is still evolving and currently is used to work in depth with individuals, couples, families, groups and communities with dreams, physical symptoms, addictions, abuse, coma, extreme psychiatric states, conflict and issues of power. Even the most chaotic seeming process, when approached with curiosity, warmth and respect, can reveal an inner order and coherence that can bring new information vital for our individual and collective growth.

The essence of Process Work is to value people as they are and to help them to become even more themselves. In practice the most appropriate and useful method of working emerges from accurately discovering and supporting the unique structure of a particular process, while carefully following the goals and needs of those involved. Consequently, the work has many appearances, but is distinguished by its avoidance of interpretation and specific programmes. Its method is to bring awareness to what is happening and this method is its only goal.

Process Work deals with the living unconscious in its momentary expression. Its philosophical and theoretical framework and rich assortment of skills for unfolding meaning provided practical means through which to connect with life, ourselves and others with great awareness and creativity.

Process Work diplomats and students practising in Leeds area are members of RS POP UK, the national body for Process Work and they have completed or undertaking formal training validated by RS POP UK and Process Work Centres of Zurich, Switzerland and Portland, Oregon, USA.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a general word for different ways of working with emotional and relationship problems like depression, anxiety, tension, shyness, loneliness etc. Because it is so general, it is difficult to say what to expect by going to a psychotherapist. They will certainly talk with you about your present problems, past life experiences, especially early childhood. During consultations the aim is to help you to identify your patterns off behaviour and expectations of yourself, which may have some bearing on how life seems to you now.

Depending on the Psychotherapist’s outlook, they may or may not focus on how you feel about your feelings, how you relate to yourself and to other people as well as the world in general.

There are differences between psychotherapy and other related occupations:

  •                A Psychiatrist is a medically trained specialist who treats emotional disorders. They tend to regard your problem as an illness. They may recommend drugs and depending upon the severity of illness they may recommend ECT (this is rarely used these days, though sometimes it is necessary).

  •                A Psychologist is not a medical doctor (although they could be). This is a person who studies human behaviour. They are also trained in Psychotherapy and may be called a Clinical Psychologist.

  •                A Psychoanalyst use psychotherapy, tend to listen more and may or may not be a doctor.

  •                Transactional Analysist (TA) can be a Psychologist or a Counsellor who uses a theory of personality and social behaviour devised by Eric Berne. It is applied in various areas of therapy, counselling, educational and organisational settings as a method for personal growth. Many of its terminology have entered everyday language.

  •                A counsellor works mainly with conscious attitudes and motives whereas a psychotherapist generally seeks to understand consciously, subconscious and unconscious feelings as well.

When choosing a therapist, you need to find out about their working ways and attitudes. It is important to choose a person with whom you can develop a good rapport, who is not biased against lifestyle, sexual orientation etc.

Reichian Therapy

Therapist of this approach are also trained as Post Reichian practise. They work with breathing, voice, touch and dialogue in any order or combination. The practitioner seeks to put people in touch with their blocked issues and free the flow of life energy, especially patterns of (self-) defense usually formed in childhood. This self-defense is armouring that operates equally our attitudes as well as bodily tensions. The aim is not to ‘attack’ defenses but to help celebrate the client’s brilliance and effective means of surviving in what was a dangerous environment whilst helping them reassess whether they still need their armour or whether it is safe and strong and they feel enough to open up more to their life events.

The goal is to release energy for creativity and pleasure in an individual form, because there are no hard and fast rules. A therapist will probably ask you to focus on your immediate experience, breathing as you sense more freely and fully going into feelings rather than pulling back or blocking. Beyond this, the process is spontaneous and personal.

All therapies are about change. People may find that they are no longer satisfied with the structures of their life, job, relationships or living situation, therefore the process isn’t always easy. It involves new feelings, new sensations, new thoughts and new perceptions. It brings us up against the fear of being open, being in contact as it sets us free.

Reichian therapy can be appropriate for a range of states and feelings. For instance in immediate crisis like bereavement or separation, chronic physical symptoms, chronic emotional states like depression, anxiety, tension or a simple sense of ‘Is this all there is to life?’

All Reichian therapists have trained with Energy Stream (The Post Reichian Therapy Association). Most of them belong to Practitioner groups, which validate members’ work and also looks into complaints about them.
