Just like acupuncture, homoeopathy causes more controversy than any other Complementary medicine approach. The more orthodox medicine and science try to discredit homoeopathy the more followers it gains. Homoeopathy is safe and effective in stimulating the natural tendency of the body to heal itself. Homoeopaths recognise that symptoms of ill health are expressions of disharmony within the whole person and that it is the patient is in need of treatment and not the disease. People react differently to the same illness. In order to find the correct remedy a homoeopath will need to know about physical symptoms and as much as possible about how the symptoms affects the person. The first consultation can take one to two hours an individual remedy may be appropriately prescribed. This can be in pill form that is allowed to dissolve under the tongue. Homoeopathic remedies are made from naturally occurring substances (herbs, vegetable, mineral and animal products). The remedies have been tried and tested for 200 years at least. It is known that they cannot cause harmful side effects and no one can become addicted to them because of the minute amount of active ingredient used in prepared formulas. How quick a someone will be cured depends the illness and personal make-up. Often physical complaints have an emotional link and this must be addressed alongside treatments for a holistic healing process to be completed. A complaint that has been there for a long time, usually will not disappear overnight, other conditions can improve more rapidly. After the first consultation a client may be asked to come back for a follow-up consultation some four to six weeks later to give the remedy time to work. However, further consultations may or may not be necessary. The aim homoeopathy is to cure the cause of illness and its symptoms rather than merely to relieve them. Every case is different just as no two people are alike. The cost of treatment varies from one homoeopath to another. CATHERINE BARKER ANDREA BARTIG DR. GILLIAN DE BOER MARGARET
