This treatment approach is using a specific communication form rather than a conversation. In counselling this takes place by means of words, gestures, facial expression, changes in breathing as these are unique to each person.

Counsellors are not reading thoughts, extra smart or make judgments. Counselling can involve an individual, a couple or an entire family and each has personal insights into the issues, perceptions and feelings. This may relate to old or new memories, feelings that go far back, yet the focus is on the ‘here-and-now,’ which is the essence of all therapies.

The counsellor's work is to tune in, identify subconscious communication patterns or messages and to reflect them back to the client, often amplified. Counselling is an honest undertaking on all sides and the treatment tools are empathy, rapport, reflecting and respect. This combination with a client's resolve to change as the source of healing energy in the treatment process.

Counselling refers to many treatment styles under this name but training and approach are poles apart. Ask a practitioner what is their  speciality.
