This an independent health profession which specialises in the treatment of mechanical disorders of the joints, particularly those of the spine, and their effects on the nervous system.

Conditions treated are lower back, upper back and neck pain, including pain which may originate in the back but is felt in other areas, such as in the arms, legs, head, abdomen and chest. Certain problems of other joints, such as the elbow, shoulder, knee and foot, can be helped. Some other condltions have been found by experience to respond to treatment, subject to examination findings. These include tension headache, migraine, vertigo, bronchial asthma, catarrh, indigestion, constipation and menstrual disorders.

Members of the British Chiropractic Association must complete a minimum of four years full-time study at an approved Chiropractic college. Studies cover all medical subjects but substituting different manipulative techniques and other treatment methods for pharmacology and surgery. The course at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractice in Bournemouth has recently been validated by the Council for National Academic Awards and now offers a B.Sc. in Chiropractice.

Problems are diagnosed by a careful case history, interview, physical examination, assessment of movement of joints, posture analysis. and the use of X-rays. The patient is referred back to their GP or to other practitioners if the problem is outside the scope of Chiropractic treatment.

The most important form of treatment is specialised manipulation of the joints, particularly those of the spine. This does not cause undue discomfort to the patient. Several other forms of treatment may be used, including muscle techniques physiotherapy, prescribed exercise, counselling and dietary advice. The average number of treatments required is seven. A major part of Chiropractice is its value in prevention of problems. Spinal checks are recommended, even when pain is not present, (especially after major or minor injuries) and for children.
